The Perfect Predator
Peregrine Falcon Watercolor and Gouache Painting-15x19"
Peregrine Falcon- the fastest member of the animal kingdom……. Experiments conducted by scientists put the bird's diving speed over 200 miles per hour and level flight at approximately 62 miles per hour. I saw a video that clocked a Peregrine closer to 240 mph………just incredible Prey is caught in flight. Using its great speed, the falcon delivers a powerful blow to its prey with a half-closed foot. It retrieves the dead bird either in mid-air or after it falls to the ground. I find the Peregrine, one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet
In the 1960s, scientists discovered that DDT was interfering in the egg shell formation of meat and fish eating birds. Healthy birds were laying eggs so thin they were crushed by the weight of the incubating adult. By 1965, no Peregrine falcons were fledged in the eastern or Central United States. By 1968, the Peregrine population was completely eradicated east of the Mississippi River. In 1972, use of DDT was severely restricted in the United States and worldwide. Since the ban the population has recovered , supported by large scale protection of nesting area and releases to the wild. We are lucky that this was detected early enough and steps were ACTUALLY taken to save this incredible bird.
The Peregrine is about the size of a large crow….females are slightly larger than males, the male is referred to as a tiercel, and the female a falcon.
With its amazing eyesight, mind blowing speed, and having very few natural predators itself, makes the Peregrine Falcon
….the perfect predator

No Hunting
American Kestrel Watercolor and Gouache Painting
The American Kestrel is a small falcon found here in North America. It is a very feisty, fierce little raptor….don’t let it’s small size fool you….it is a good little hunter of insects and small prey in open territory. American Kestrels are similar in size and shape to a Mourning Dove
Males have slate-blue wings and the females’ wings are reddish brown, which is the easiest way to identify them.I enjoyed painting this little fierce flyer…..such a pretty falcon……the most colorful of all falcons, I believe.
Original Watercolor and Gouache Painting is available.

I just love the 'demented' look of the Osprey.

Painting in progress
Initial under-painting of the vultures. As I was painting this, I kept imagining what it would be like to have two or three of these in the backyard. It is hard to imagine the size of this bird, measuring approximately 40 inches tall, with an 8 to 10 foot wingspan! Thank you Vearl Brown for the wonderful reference from your trip to Kenya.
